An excellent review of the dual standards over time.
Marriage follows the same pattern from the “I do” point in English-based countries, the woman by custom changes her name.
In some countries, you have two last names — the first last name from both the father and mother. A woman does not change her name when she marries.
Robert Heinlein’s book, “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” contains an excellent analysis of marriage. From that, I agreed that it was stupid for my new wife to change her name when she married. Based on that book, I had already thought about it years before I met her.
She would been required to change her driver’s license, business cards, bank accounts, plus an insane list of other things. Dumb.
Things are getting better, and I expect the trend to continue, but precise equality may never be achievable. Before you disagree, consider the concept of perfection and how often it occurs.
