Based on popular vote, Trump won the popular vote of 49 states by 1.2 million and lost California by 4.2 million. That means that a candidate can concentrate on one very large state and just stay fairly close on all of the others.
The Electoral College does grant slightly more influence to small states, but not enough to make a big difference.
I wonder how the election would have come out if electors were granted by Congressional district instead of by entire states. Of course, 100 would be in pairs by state.
It will take a constitutional amendment to change it. So, discussion is moot until that happens.
