Here is another thing to try: Don’t give them cash, or very little of it. Make sure that you have little cash when visiting. Don’t let them have your debit or credit card!

Give grocery gift cards or pay the electric bill directly. Do not pay credit cards. During a divorce, I gave my teenage kids grocery gift cards, on top of paying support, so that they would have food in the house.
