I always looked for someone who could learn, ask questions and would listen. I was not in management, but I trained every new person, experienced or not, for many years in more than one company. One woman said that she learned more from me in two months that she did in the last year and a half that included a 6-week programming boot camp. It wasn’t even my primary job as a software developer.
I recommended only one person based on technical abilities. The job was highly technical working with the hardware and we needed someone immediately. I warned management that he was perfect for that job, but never put him into a position working with people. Five reorgs later, they put him on the help desk. He was fired two weeks later.
