I have not thought about the mechanics of listening to music until this article.
We have a free 4-hour concert on our town square every day: 30 days, 30 different bands, seats 500 plus those bringing folding chairs.
Some are great, most are average, and a few are awful for the square. I think that the difference is swing.
The open area holds up to 200 dancers. A couple of bands attract very few, if any. Even playing a song that a popular band plays, few dance. With one, the song sounds lively, and the other, the song sounds dreary, dead. People leave early.
I judge bands based on the dancers and the number of people still awake.
