I was looking for the cat, who writes whenever it feels like it and has a subject that it is interested in. It’s still important to be somewhat prolific, meaning a few times per month, at least, to maintain followers.
I suspect that there are two Medium populations: writers and read-only. And you pick up followers from the read-only population only by being curated or being a writer for a publication that they follow. So, joining publications may be almost as important as being curated.
In any case, comments are important. They should be written with as close to the same quality as you would a story, realizing that you would much spend less time proofing them. They, too, will draw followers.
