I realized that racism was built into the culture at age 22 when I made a racist remark that I had heard all of my life. I’ve watched for such built-in things since then. I suspect that racism is just a subset of elitism.
I trained new programmers as part of my job. My new trainee said I was much different than she expected from the job interview. I asked why she left the prior company after such a short time. She was hired to increase the female and black workforce percentages, not for her expertise as she was told.
I told her that was not the reason I recommended we hire her. I said, “You are smart, can learn on your own, and I don’t have to send you to a bunch of classes.” I thought my comment sounded kind of gruff, but it was probably a complement. Also, I was right about her.
