I wrote a custom app as my first assignment out of college. It took 6 months.

Our sister company in another state bought a package and couldn’t get it to work even a year later.

That app increased the company’s share of the entire market by 20% and ran for 18 years without a single update.

My latest company built custom apps with Excel for their own operations. When I was hired, I added features that eliminated almost all data entry errors using a dynamic statistical analysis when the data was entered.

Standard apps are usually good for static, well-known situations. Even then, you may need to add some custom interfaces.
