Interview question — can you handle a 5-minute deadline? Well, I never had a deadline that short before.

It was with a publisher with a 5:00 pm deadline. Customers started calling, for good reason, if it was 1 minute late.

I changed the environment in the first two weeks so that the deadline was longer existed unless a problem occurred at 4:55 pm as described in the “Once a cat, always a cat” section of my article Managers: How do You Manage a Cat?. My manager even ordered me not to do it.

The problems in the article, in such a large and active environment, prevent a quick solution and might even make things worse. After all,

The fix will, too.

A good solution will probably have to be very innovative, which can’t be predicted.
