My co-worker’s mother, in her 80s, with diabetes was in the hospital.

The doctors recommended this surgery and that amputation, with about a 50% chance of surviving the surgeries. There would be a long and painful rehabilitation.

He asked the doctors, “How long will she live without the surgeries?”
Reply, “A few months.”

He then asked, “How long will she live if she has the surgeries?”
Reply, “About a year.”

He concluded that they were going to

torture her to death

and didn’t have it done.

I never even heard of the term “Palliative care” until I read this story.
