My goal was never to work overtime, for 3 reasons:
- If I had to, somebody screwed up.
- Errors increased as I got tired. It usually took twice as long to find and fix them than it would have to do it right the next morning.
- My brain solves problems while I am reading sci-fi or sleeping. One manager took advantage of that trait.
I told my programmer trainees that I did not want them to work overtime, either. One said she learned more from me in 2 months than in the prior year and a half which included a 6-week programmer boot camp.
One time I was reprimanded in my annual review for “not spending enough time at my desk.” I pointed out that my productivity was double anybody else. That didn’t matter. Maybe the boss was looking for something to fill in the blank.
