My wife and I have used the “Yours, Mine, and Ours” money plan from the start. I never knew that it had a name.

We split the “Ours” portion based on percentage of total income for the pay period. That changed even with unemployment — usually 90/10. Joint savings accounts, like for a house and escrow, were “Ours” expenses.

Cars and clothes were personal. IRA and 401k accounts were also personal. We agreed to always contribute at least to the company match on the 401k. It worked well throughout our working years.

Restaurants were usually “Ours” unless we were taking the other out on a date.
