The first step is to change your own outlook.
We hired a young, black woman programmer in the late 80’s. She was hired at her last job to increase black and female workforce percentages. I said I recommended her because, “You are smart, can learn on your own, and I don’t have to send you to a bunch of classes.” A statement of fact that she could do the job, just like saying “It’s raining outside.” Had nothing to do with race or gender. That’s the way things should be.
