The young lady said, based on the computer programming job interview, that she thought that I would be terrible to work with.
Then, I turned out to do the technical training. Someone else did the social stuff, introductions, etc. She said that I was entirely different to work with.
I asked her, “Why did you leave your last job after 2 months?”
Answer: “I was hired for a project requiring my area of expertise. After I started, they said that the project was cancelled months ago.” She was hired to increase black and women work staff percentages with one person. They were trying to find something for her to do.
Me: “That is not why I recommended you. You are smart and can learn on your own without me having to send you to a bunch of classes.”
Later, I thought that I sounded kind of gruff, but it was probably one of the best complements she ever had. Also, I was right about her.
This was definitely a management problem, but not necessarily POC. It could have been many things, such as age, lack of management training, social background, or you weren’t coming across like you thought you were. I drove some of my older managers nuts.
You just have to find the right work environment.
