We hired a young, black woman as a programmer. I participated in only one job interview. After she was hired, I told her why I recommended her: “You are smart, can learn on your own, and I don’t have to send you to a bunch of classes.”
Another said, “Do you know I am Hispanic?” She looked like she was about to be hit.
Me, “No, is that supposed to make some sort of difference?”
Her, “Yes. It does to some.”
Me, “It doesn’t to me. All I care about is that your programs work.”
Maybe I was unusual.
All the women did great. I had to have 2 men fired – one for arrogance and one for stupidity.
I’ll investigate Harris further.
